Dover Class Minesweeper Vessel
Perimeter Action Vessel
In early border skirmishes with Klingon fleets prior to the Treaty
of Organia, the Starfleet Marine Corps called for the development of
a smaller, compact starship designed specifically for the insertion
of combat Marines into hot LZs. Due to the nature of Klingon forces,
the Marine Corps ruled out using shuttlecrafts and similarly sized vessels
for this duty, as they lacked the firepower necessary to hold off enemy
forces. Starfleet engineers turned to the Perimeter Action class vessels,
modifying the structure to accommodate living quarters and staging areas
for some dozen platoons of Starfleet Marines. The resulting Dover class
proved its worth after being deployed to the Neutral Zone and other
border regions of the Federation. Dover class vessels were also assigned
to diplomatic missions and to convoy protection.
