Chekov Class Heavy Frigate
Modified Miranda Class Heavy Frigate
Following his appointment as Commander in Chief of Starfleet in the
early 2300s, Admiral Pavel Chekov immediately sought Federation funding
for an expanded line of dedicated weapons platform ships to bolster
Starfleet positions along the Neutral Zone. Increased tensions between
Klingon and Romulan forces, which would ultimately lead to the war between
the empires in the 2340s, was taking a devastating toll on both Starfleet
and civilian vessels operating near their unstable borders. The Federation
Council opposed this plan, as diplomats argued the development of new
warship designs would be interpreted as an act of aggression by the
Empires. In the end, a compromise was reached; Admiral Chekov was given
the go ahead to develop a new sub variant of an existing class to accomplish
his goal.
A Miranda Class Heavy Frigate was chosen for the base design of the
new starship, code-named Damocles. The Damocles
design team bolstered the weapons system of other several different
Miranda class refits, adding a second pair of dedicated heavy phaser
banks to the rear of the vessel. By far their most innovative alteration
to the Miranda design was to move the nacelles to a position lateral
to the saucer section, making them a harder target in frontal assaults.
In addition, the change made the Damocles vessel appear,
at least from a distance, to be a Romulan starship rather than a Federation
starship, which gave the ship an slight stealth advantage in conflicts
along the Romulan Neutral Zone.
The Damocles prototype was completed at the Yalbo shipyards
in 2310. Officially named the Chekov class, in honor of its principal
supporter, the vessel saw limited success in its Neutral Zone protection.
Unfortunately, the Miranda class vessel was imply outclassed by newer
Klingon and Romulan starship classes, and the class suffered tremendous
losses at the outbreak of the Klingon-Romulan war. With the destruction
of the Enterprise-C at Narendra III, the Federation Council finally
approved more spending towards offensive weaponry, and the Chekov Class
was officially retired. However, lessons learned by engineers in the
construction of this design helped to pave the way for the Defiant class
of the 2380s.

USS Chekov
Every human being on this earth is born with a tragedy, and it isn't
original sin. He's born with the tragedy that he has to grow up. That
he has to leave the nest, the security, and go out to do battle. He
has to lose everything that is lovely and fight for a new loveliness
of his own making, and it's a tragedy. A lot of people don't have the
courage to do it.
-Helen Hayes, in Roy Newquist, Showcase, 1966
USS Mutara Nebula
Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win.
-Jonathan Kozol
USS Ceti Alpha V
Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them
on the defensive. And don't ever apologize for anything.
-Harry S Truman
USS Khitomer
He lives not long who battles with the immortals, nor do his children
prattle about his knees when he has come back from battle and the dread
fray.
-Homer
USS Donatu V
We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the
sudden shock of battle nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion
will wear us down. Give us the tools and we will finish the job.
-Sir Winston Churchill
USS Sulu
To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence;
supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without
fighting.
-Sun-Tzu
USS Terrell
Military power wins battles, but spiritual power wins wars.
-General George Catlett Marshall
USS Reliant
It may not be that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle
to the strong - but that is the way to bet.
-Damon Runyon
USS Genesis
If we had less statesmanship we could get along with fewer battleships.
-Mark Twain
USS Uhura
Virtue is a state of war, and to live in it we have always to combat
with ourselves.
-Jean-Jacques Rousseau
USS Star of Russia
I exhort you also to take part in the great
combat, which is the combat of life, and greater than every other earthly
combat.
-Plato
